Advanced Corneal Transplant Options

We offer a full range of corneal transplant procedures tailored to each patient’s specific needs:

  • Ultrathin DSAEK (Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty): An effective option for corneal swelling and Fuchs’ dystrophy, using a modern ultrathin technique for speedy recovery and maximal visual potential.

  • DMEK (Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty): A highly precise, minimally invasive transplant ideal for endothelial dysfunction.

  • PK (Penetrating Keratoplasty): A full-thickness transplant perfect for full-thickness scars or cornea issues involving multiple layers of the cornea

  • Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK): Preserves healthy endothelium while replacing only the diseased anterior layers of the cornea

Our goal is to restore and protect your vision—using the most advanced tools available and a patient-first approach prioritizing your long-term success.

Keratoconus

Keratoconus causes progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea into a cone-like shape, leading to distorted vision, like looking out of a warped windshield. Doctor Feng offers the most advanced treatments available for keratoconus, including:

  • Corneal Tissue Addition Keratoplasty (CTAK): A cutting-edge surgical approach that restores shape and function by adding healthy donor tissue. Doctor Feng was the first and is still the only surgeon in Connecticut offering this evidence-based, revolutionary treatment for keratoconus patients that decreases dependence on contact lenses and improves best corrected visual acuity in glasses

  • Corneal Crosslinking: A simple procedure utilizing eye drops and UV light that strengthens the cornea and halts progression.

  • Penetrating Keratoplasty: A full-thickness corneal transplant for those whose best solution is a brand new cornea

With early detection and customized care, many keratoconus patients can avoid transplants altogether and maintain excellent vision.

Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia (OSSN)

"Skin cancer of the eye" affects the corneal and conjunctival tissues of the ocular surface. Risk factors include but are not limited to UV exposure, smoking, immunocompromise, and allergies.

Doctor Feng trained directly and extensively under world-class experts in OSSN and the inventor of topical chemotherapy at highly rated Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the #1 ophthalmology hospital in US News and World Report for over 20 consecutive years. Her modern, cutting edge knowledge in this field provides her with specialized experience as one of the only doctors in Connecticut with specialized training and experience in evaluating and treating this rare condition.

Treatments include:

  • Topical chemotherapy - eye drops effectively treat and eliminate over 90% of cases

  • Surgical excision - with cryotherapy and absolute alcohol to reduce the chance of reccurence

  • Radiation - needed only in the rarest of cases. If necessary, Dr. Feng would refer to an appropriate center for treatment

Using advanced imaging, precise excision, and topical treatments, we deliver excellent outcomes while preserving eye health and appearance.

Additional Corneal Conditions We Treat

Our practice is fully equipped to diagnose and treat a wide range of corneal conditions, including:

  • Pterygium: This benign growth can cause redness, irritation, and cosmetic concerns. We offer advanced surgical removal with techniques that minimize recurrence and preserve comfort.

  • Corneal Ectasias: We treat post-LASIK ectasia and other corneal thinning disorders with crosslinking, specialty lenses, and surgical options like CTAK when needed.

  • Infections (Keratitis): Prompt, targeted treatment of bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic infections is essential to prevent scarring and protect your vision.

  • Corneal Dystrophies: We manage a wide range of inherited corneal disorders, including Fuchs’ dystrophy and lattice dystrophy, using both medical management and surgical care like DMEK, DSAEK, PK, PTK, superficial keratectomy, and more.
